A search of the Cayman Islands General Registry reveals a company’s name, registration number, incorporation date, registration status, and the location of its registered office and, since 2019, the public can also inspect the names of a company’s current directors for a fee. Beyond these core details, Cayman Islands company law does not require disclosure of shareholders, beneficial owners, financial statements, or historical filings to the public.

Basic registry details anyone can search

The Cayman Islands General Registry, maintained by the Registrar of Companies, allows any member of the public to search a company’s name, registration number, entity type, incorporation date, and current good-standing status. The location of a company’s registered office must also be disclosed by the Registrar to any member of the public who asks, under the Companies Act (2025 Revision).

The public register of directors

Since the Companies (Amendment) Law, 2019 came into force, the Cayman Islands Registrar of Companies has maintained a list of the names of a company’s current directors and alternate directors, open to public inspection for a fee of CI$50. Only names are disclosed, and only current directors, not historical appointments.

Certificates confirming a company’s standing

The Registrar will also issue certificates, such as a Certificate of Good Standing, Certificate of Incorporation, or Certificate of Incumbency, confirming basic facts about a company’s existence and status. These are typically requested by the company itself or its registered office provider, for example to satisfy a bank or counterparty, rather than searched by the general public.

What a public search does not show

A General Registry search will not reveal who owns the company’s shares, who its beneficial owners are, its financial statements, or its books of account, all of which remain confidential under Cayman Islands law.

For most counterparties, a General Registry search combined with a Certificate of Good Standing is sufficient due diligence. Anything beyond that requires the company’s own cooperation.
